Technically, it's very easy: CSS and HTML are pre-returned to JavaScript, and then added character by character in the body of the page. Web technology is very permissive, incomplete code is just ignored while already finished statements are read, which gives the impression that the pen is built gradually.

Artistically it's very interesting! The code speaks directly to us through the comments, and allows us to imagine a future may not be so distant or artificial intelligence will develop and come to us through the computer.
